VIRTUAL VEHICLE is a leading international R&D center for the automotive and rail industries. The center focuses on advanced virtualization of vehicle development. This linking of numerical simulations and hardware testing leads to a powerful HW-SW system design.

The requirements for efficiency and minimization of CO2 emissions combined with increasing comfort and safety requirements pose major technical challenges for the automotive industry. In order to get closer to the goal of a prototype-free development, an integrated prediction of the deformation and failure behavior of the component and connection technology is of enormous importance. In particular, the use of modern high-strength lightweight materials and – associated – new joining techniques occur under stress conditions high stress concentrations in the component structure, which can lead to the formation of cracks in the surrounding structure in addition to the failure of the component. These cracks can in many cases lead to a spontaneous breakage of the component and are very critical from the point of view of passive safety. To prevent this failure of the component in a crash by design measures, the forecasting tools must be able to properly describe the failure of the fasteners and crack initiation and crack propagation.


  • Introduction to the basics of fracture mechanics
