VIRTUAL VEHICLE is a leading international R&D center for the automotive and rail industries. The center focuses on advanced virtualization of vehicle development. This linking of numerical simulations and hardware testing leads to a powerful HW-SW system design.

The maintenance process of freight wagons and their components is currently mainly based on fixed inspection intervals. These conservative intervals lead to correspondingly high maintenance costs. The trend towards condition-based maintenance is therefore towards cost optimization. However, this strategy requires continuous knowledge of the relevant conditions of the wagon components in operation. The aim of this work is the conception and evaluation of the suitability of different measuring systems for on-board diagnostic systems for freight wagons.

Your tasks:

  • Planning and preparation of a measurement setup on a rail vehicle
  • Research regarding suitable sensors for condition diagnosis of selected components
  • Comparison of measurement systems for suitability for on-board diagnostic systems
  • Conception of an architecture for the implementation of diagnostic algorithms

Your profile:

  • Ongoing technical studies (Physics, Mathematics, Mechanical Engineering, Automotive/Vehicle Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Control Engineering or similar)
  • Basics in Electrical Engineering, Measurement and Sensor Technology
  • Great knowledge of Matlab, Simulink and Python
