With 11,000 employees worldwide, AVL is the world's largest independent company for the development, simulation and testing of powertrain systems (hybrid, combustion engine, transmission, electric drive, batteries, fuel cell and control technology) for passenger cars, commercial vehicles, construction, large engines and their integration into the vehicle. A robot shall be developed to autonomously operate the Human-Machine-Interface of a touch screen in a vehicle. Target of this Diploma Thesis is to find and further develop a picture & text recognition algorithm which identifies icons and text on a touchscreen using a camera mounted on the robot.


  • Literature study on OSS picture & text recognition algorithms and selection of the most promising solution
  • Definition of SW-Architecture
  • Customization of the selected algorithm(s) to specific in-vehicle needs
  • Selection of most appropriate HW (camera, processor)
  • System setup and prove of concept
  • Suggestion for improvements regarding in-vehicle needs (different touchscreen size/slope, glare, shaking)

Remuneration: The successful completion of the thesis is remunerated with a one-time fee of EUR 2,600 before tax.

According to the Austrian Employment of Foreign Nationals Act it is unfortunately not possible to assign graduate work to third-country citizens (Non-EU citizens) who study at a university abroad.
